Morning vs. Night Skincare Routines: What You Need to Know

Morning vs. Night Skincare Routines: What You Need to Know

Do a bit of research into what your skincare routine should consist of and you’ll find that advice differs depending on whether you’re building a morning or a night routine. While you can get away with following the same routine day and night, your skin will benefit even more if you have two separate routines, each one catering to the different needs that your skin has at each time of day.

How do your skin’s needs change and what should each skincare routine look like? Read on as Celestolite talks through everything you need to know!

Do You Really Need Separate Skincare Routines for Morning and Night?

So, why the need for separate morning and night skincare routines? It all comes down to how your skin functions…

Your Skin During the Day

During the day, your skin goes into defense mode. This is when it has to deal with a large number of environmental aggressors, from the sun to pollution. They all cause free radical damage in the skin, leading to everything from premature wrinkles to discoloration. Any existing skin concerns that you may have, such as oiliness or dryness, will also worsen with free radical damage.

Your skin’s natural defense system is usually good enough to provide some form of protection…but only to a certain extent. This is why it’s important for your morning skincare routine to offer some extra support. With the right ingredients and products, your morning routine can leave your skin feeling fortified and better protected against environmental harm. This will, as you can imagine, lead to healthier-looking skin overall.

Your Skin at Night

In the evenings, however, your skin drops its defenses. Instead, it now focuses on repairing all of the damage that it has encountered over the course of the day. Research shows that nighttime is when the majority of skin cell regeneration occurs, meaning that the right skincare routine could leave your skin feeling even more capable of healing itself while you sleep.

It’s also worth noting that transepidermal water loss increases at night. This is the rate at which your skin loses moisture to evaporation. Again, your evening skincare routine should account for this so that you can wake up to skin that looks soft and dewy. The good news is that the skin is also more permeable at night. This means that any products you apply will have an easier time accessing your skin cells, making evenings the perfect opportunity to give your skin some potent actives.

Putting Together a Morning Skincare Routine

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to building a skincare routine, in addition to the time of day. From your skin type to your skin concerns, all of this should influence the products that you use. With that said, here’s a basic morning skincare routine that should give your complexion most of what it needs to thrive:

Cleanse

Estrella Cleansing Mousse

Every skincare routine should start off with a cleanse. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to use a cleanser. Those with severely sensitive or dry skin may choose to cleanse with just water in the mornings, especially if a cleanser was used the previous evening.

However, usually, a cleanser in the morning can be beneficial too. Even though your skin may not seem to be dirty, a large amount of sebum and bacteria can build up overnight. If your bedding hasn’t been freshly washed, then germs from that will also transfer onto your skin while you sleep.

With that said, a gentle cleanser is all you’ll need in the mornings. A product like the Celestolite Estrella Cleansing Mousse would be ideal. It boasts a blend of amino acids and hydrating ingredients, which will set your skin up well for the rest of the day.

Tone

Celestolite Estrella Facial Toner

Once you’re done cleansing, it’s always a good idea to follow up with a toner. This applies to all skin types, although your skin type should dictate the toner that you use. Having said that, find yourself a hydrating toner that has been designed to soothe the feeling of inflammation and irritation and all skin types would benefit!

This is exactly why the Celestolite Estrella Facial Toner is such a hit. Thanks to aloe vera leaf juice, it’s exceptionally hydrating. This, combined with chamomile extract and cucumber fruit extract, also helps to calm the feeling of inflammation. You’ll find witch hazel extract in this formula too – a great ingredient for making the pores look smaller.

Apply an Antioxidant Serum

Estrella Renewing Vitamin C Serum

When it comes to preventing the appearance of free radical damage, antioxidants are what you need. These powerful compounds have been proven, time and time again, to counter the look of oxidative damage. Give your skin plenty of antioxidants in your morning skincare routine and it will immediately feel better protected against all of the environmental aggressors it will encounter throughout the day.

There are plenty of antioxidants out there but some are better than others. Chances are that you’re already aware of which antioxidants are king, with vitamin C revered for being one of the best. Other vitamins, particularly A and E, are also renowned for their antioxidant capabilities.

If you want to gain maximum benefits from the antioxidants you use, find a product that combines multiple antioxidants as they work better together. One formula that does just that is the Celestolite Estrella Renewing Vitamin C Serum. It features vitamins A, C, and E, giving you the full trifecta when it comes to the most powerful antioxidants around.

While this serum can be used in the evening too, there’s an extra benefit that comes from incorporating this product into your morning skincare routine. Studies have found that using vitamin C before applying a sunscreen (which will be the next step in this morning skincare routine) can leave the skin feeling even more protected against sun damage.

Moisturize and Protect

Nova Bright Skin Cream

Every skincare routine should end with a moisturizer. However, in the mornings, you need to consider sun protection as well. This is why SPF moisturizers are becoming increasingly popular. With these formulas, you’ll be able to moisturize and protect at the same time, saving you from having to use two separate products.

This is why we created the Celestolite Nova Bright Skin Cream SPF 30. Not only does it provide broad-spectrum sun protection but it’s also filled with even more antioxidants! It will give your skin a luminous glow while also shielding it from sun damage, making it the perfect addition to a morning skincare routine.

Putting Together an Evening Skincare Routine

Now that you understand how to put together a skincare routine for the morning, let’s take a closer look at a routine that would be better suited for the evenings:

Double Cleanse

Again, just like with your morning skincare routine, cleansing should be the first step. For many people, a single cleanse is enough. However, if your skin is feeling particularly dirty, double cleansing can be helpful.

This technique is exactly as it sounds; cleansing your skin twice instead of once. The first cleanse should be with an oil-based cleanser. This will target oil-based impurities, such as sebum and SPF. Then, follow up with a water-based cleanser to rid your skin of water-based impurities, like sweat. This will give you a much more thorough cleanse, enabling your skin to fully soak up the subsequent products that you apply.

Tone

Just like in the mornings, follow your evening cleanse up with a toner. The good news is that you don’t need to invest in a separate toner for your evening skincare routine. The same formula that you used in the morning will suffice for night use as well!

Target

Nova Dark Spot Corrector

As we mentioned earlier, the skin is more permeable at night. This makes your evening skincare routine the perfect time to give your skin active ingredients that will tackle any visible skin concerns you’re dealing with.

The Celestolite Nova Dark Spot Corrector, for example, is great for evening use. This formula will target the appearance of dark spots and discoloration, evening out your skin tone to leave your skin looking balanced and brighter.

Eye care products should be another focus in the evenings. If you often wake up with dark circles or puffy eye bags, give the Celestolite Estrella Eye Serum a try.

Hydrate

Mars Stellar Serum

As you know, moisture loss increases overnight. To save you from waking up with dehydrated skin, give your skin some extra hydration before you go to bed.

The best way to do this is with a hydrating serum, such as the Celestolite Mars Stellar Serum. This serum is brimming with a blend of hydrating ingredients. Sodium hyaluronate and glycerin are known for their powerful moisture-binding properties, as are collagen and peptides.

For an even bigger moisture boost, apply this serum while your skin is still damp from the previous product you’ve used. This will help to trap that extra moisture, bumping up your skin’s hydration levels even more.

Moisturize

Estrella Night Cream

Your evening skincare routine should end with a moisturizer. Ideally, this should be a thicker formula than the cream you used in the morning. This will, again, help to counter the increase in moisture loss that occurs overnight. A thicker cream will form a thicker barrier over your skin’s surface, blocking evaporation.

This is why a night cream, like the Celestolite Estrella Night Cream, would be a good investment. This cream boasts a blend of shea butter and sunflower seed oil, both of which are extremely moisturizing thanks to their high fatty acid content. This moisturizer will hydrate your skin too, ensuring that your skin feels decadently smooth when you wake up.

Summary

When it comes down to it, having a single skincare routine that you follow day and night is better than having no skincare routine at all. However, if you really want to hone in on your skin’s needs, two separate skincare routines is, without a doubt, the way to go. This may seem a little confusing at first but once you understand how your skin’s needs change as the day progresses, you’ll be able to easily figure out which products would be more beneficial during the day and which would be better suited for night.
